TiddlyWiki is more than just a product; it's a community consisting of developers, users, and everything in between. There are mailing lists, IRC channels, third-party applications and plugins, and plenty of sites about how to use the product. One thing that's never been complete, though, is reference documentation, so here's an effort to change that.

For a long time, the main TiddlyDocs reference has been at http://tiddlywiki.org/ and that's been sufficient for many things, but we decided it was time to build an exhaustive reference. And that's what we've done with http://hoster.peermore.com/recipes/tiddlywiki-reference/tiddlers.wiki. It covers all of the following, as they appear in the core TiddlyWiki product: special tags, configuration settings, options, formatters, paramifiers, special tiddler fields, error messages, macros, shadow tiddlers. There's also a glossary of key terms.

Just as important, we're http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eating_one's_own_dog_food now; whereas http://tiddlywiki.org is mediawiki-powered, the brave new world of multi-user TiddlyWiki (made possible with http://tiddlyweb.com) means we can now host a product like this with TiddlyWiki. It also means we have a docs API "for free" which others might use to build documentation mashups.

The documentation is an ongoing process, but so far we have catalogued every macro, shadow tiddler, and definition in the TiddlyWiki core. We're also working on a collection of design patterns to go with it.

http://tiddlywiki.mahemoff.com/playground.html is a tool for web developers - a kind of mini-IDE or pastebin, similar in some respects to http://jsbin.com or http://jsfiddle.net. While TiddlyWiki is itself a kind of IDE, since you can hack TiddlyWiki from within itself, there's a difference here in that these are generic, self-contained, web apps. Being based on http://mini.softwareas.com/sandboxing-widgets-iframes-visit-from-premasa, their style and logic is isolated from the TiddlyWiki itself. So it's a lot more like a traditional coding environment, where you code in one area and test in a different, isolated, area.

You can use Playground to build up a list of bite-sized demos, each having its own HTML, Javascript, and CSS. In the demo here, I've built an http://tiddlywiki.mahemoff.com/html5.html to show off some HTML5 features. I'm also plann
ing a visual effects playground and a CSS3 playground.

A related project is http://blog.whatfettle.com/2008/05/11/tiddlyprocessing/, which Paul Downey created to demonstrate http://processing.org/.

~TiddlySpace is a higher-level web app, building on TiddlyWeb, to make it easy for folks to spin off new multi-user (or single-user) TiddlyWiki instances. This is really the most important piece, and the one everything’s been leading up to, when it comes to Osmosoft’s mission to get all manner of web apps running inside the enterprise, and will hopefully be just as useful for other enterprises as well as ad hoc groups working on the broader internet. With TiddlySpace, you have an application running at http://TiddlyPocketBook.TiddlySpace.com for example. You click a “clone” button, type in “CameraGuide”, and suddenly you have a clone of that web app running at http://CameraGuide.TiddlySpace.com. The neat thing is that the new space has copies of all the pocketbook tiddlers, which you can happily hack. The application tiddlers are “copied by reference” from a master application space, say http://TiddlyPocketBookApp.TiddlySpace.com, so you will inherit any future changes made to the application. All this sounds complicated, but will be seamless to the user, and is also easy for us to implement while building TiddlySpace, thanks to TiddlyWebs’ flexible bags and recipes model for containment of tiddlers. (See my earlier discussion too.) Pretty much all of TiddlySpace is driven by client-side code TiddlyWiki plugins, connecting to the TiddlyWeb server.

Elvis is a collaborative reporting tool. For example, it can be used for scouting purposes or competitive analysis - several team members search the web for relevant material. They hit a bookmarklet to add info from a site they're looking at, and there are a number of sections to be filled out for each of these sites. They can also add new entries by email.

Elvis illustrates the different ways a tiddler can be created. Sure, you can create a new tiddler straight on the website...but you can also add it using a bookmarklet on any given site, or by sending an email from your desktop or mobile, or maybe even from another application. Elvis also uses the http://tiddlywiki.mahemoff.com/StructurePlugin.html to ensure each tiddler has a certain structure, and each field of the tiddler is in fact another tiddler with its own unique properties and permissions.

This is a showcase of what's been happening in Osmosoft and the ~TiddlyWiki community. A showcase for each day. Day 12 will be http://softwareas.com/twelve-days-of-tiddlywiki-twelve-days-of-osmosoft and I decided to create this ~TiddlyWiki-powered microsite to celebrate my time here.

http://tiddlywiki.org is just a single-page web application at the core, but with the right plugins and server-side components, it can also produce powerful, multi-user, web applications. http://osmosoft.com is the open source innovation arm of BT, originally an acquisition of the company founded by TiddlyWiki creator Jeremy Ruston. It champions and governs open source and web standards within BT, and makes open-source products in line with BT's needs, operating predominately on the public internet.

There's lots going on with TiddlyWiki outside Osmosoft, but this site is a showcase of things myself and colleagues are doing with it.

Thanks to Jeremy Ruston and Matt Lucht for some ideas on the design here ... and to the jQuery crew to which http://jquery14.com/ is blatantly homaged. Matt Lucht - a friend of Osmosoft - is helping out with this site too.

Day 2 and we look at what's coming up with the in-progress www.tiddlywiki.com/tiddlywiki5, putting it in a historical context. TiddlyWiki 5 is the biggest upgrade since TiddlyWiki's inception in 2004, a complete rewrite that breaks compatibility in order to usher in a host of new features. The vision includes:
* Rich text editing.
* Embedded SVG and images in the single TiddlyWiki file - with graphical editors.
* Ready for hosting in multi-user server environments - e.g. support for revision history, multiple users, and activity streams.
* Renders content without Javascript and presents cleanly to HTTP robots.
* Enhanced view for wide screens and degrades to phone UI.
* ... and still all in a single file, and still degrades to support IE6 (yes, including embedded images).

In addition to the video above, we'll soon add:
* An overview video of the original TiddlyWiki from its creator Jeremy Ruston
* An overview video by myself explaining the "happy path" from novice user to developer
* A detailed look at TiddlyWiki 5's features
* The programming hacks involved in TiddlyWiki 5's creation, for the benefit of developers. (ContentEditable, MHTML, SVG, "text/x-tiddler" script tags, jQuery-style chaining).

Today's showcase co-incides with a live launch at BT Centre. It's http://ilga.org/, the International Lesbian and Gay Association. The site provides data on relevant laws in each of the world's region, which may be of passing interest to some and of life-saving importance to others. There's a good summary of the http://jaybyjayfresh.com/2009/06/13/using-tiddlyweb-as-a-content-management-system-for-ilga-org/ from one of the developers, Jon Lister, and a good summary of the http://jonrobson.me.uk/posts/The%20story%20of%20ILGA,%20Osmosoft%20and%20Me in a personal account from another developer Jon Robson. The video above features a third developer, Ben Gillies.

From a technical perspective, the portal shows how the TiddlyWeb server can be detached from the ~TiddlyWiki client to serve data in other ways, and to produce http://ilga.org/ilga/ "for free", and also a ~TiddlyWiki UI "for free" to perform back-end administration, if you have the right permissions. It also showcases some non-~Tiddywiki UI work performed in Osmosoft, such as the clickable world map, which is a self-contained and canvas-powered.

We recorded some feedback from the launch:

"12 days" has shared products in various states of polish, from early prototypes to live production systems. On this final day, here's a product right at the beginning of its lifecycle. This is a screencast showing the evolution of a tiddlywiki, starting from a freshly-minted TiddlyWiki downloaded from TiddlyWiki.com, and transforming it into a viable multi-user forum.

The steps shown in this screencast:
* Customising the forum's look-and-feel by updating shadow tiddlers (SiteTitle, SiteSubtitle, ColorPalette, StyleSheet, DefaultTiddlers, MainMenu).
* Using tags, the list macro, and the newTiddler macro to show and create new topics.
* Reusing components with backstage (CommentsPlugin, SinglePageMode, TaggedTemplateTweak)
* Building a custom macro (taggedCount)
* Transforming into a multi-user forum (Hoster)

Thanks to TiddlyWiki's reuse capabilities, it's easy to assemble and configure existing components to make products like this forum.

Scrumptious is a social bookmarking and trail-making tool. Like Delicious, you can add bookmarks, name them, describe them tag them, comment on them. In addition, you can also make "trails" - lists of bookmarks that take someone down a path, where each bookmark has its own annotation e.g. make a trail to show someone how to get into podcasting. (The genesis of this idea is http://softwareas.com/as-we-may-think-url-trails). It's envisioned a team could create a Scrumptious instance for collaboration on a one-off task, e.g. identify a list of competitor websites.

Scrumptious shows how you can build a non-~TiddlyWiki UI on top of ~TiddlyWiki. The trail player UI empties the page and clears all stylesheets, to give the illusion of a completely separate page. But you can dynamically flip back and forth between the ~TiddlyWiki and the trail player, so you can see the TiddlyWiki as a back-end admin tool. In addition, the ~TiddlyWiki UI is heavily customised, with: unique appearance for different types of tiddlers; auto-completion for tags; and tag clouds. Scrumptious was developed by Michael Mahemoff.

http://www.wiki-data.com/ is a portal of business intelligence data, containing info on companies worldwide. You can search and browse companies by name or ID, and propose clarifications to the data. Like ILGA (featured on Day 3), it's an example of a ~TiddlyWeb back-end and a non-~TiddlyWiki front-end, and it also showcases ~TiddlyWeb's flexible storage mechanism, as a custom data store was built to ensure sufficient performance for the 250,000 (and growning) company records in the system.

Wiki-Data is owned by Avox, and Avox also offer a more detailed ~TiddlyWeb-powered portal, http://www.myavoxdata.com/, under a commercial license. The site was developed primarily by former Osmosoftie http://jaybyjayfresh.com, and Osmosoft contractor - and lead ~TiddlyWeb developer - http://cdent.tumblr.com/. There is also http://softwareas.com/wikidata-hackathon-wikidata-a-wiki-of-companies-data that kicked the project off.

http://tiddlyslidy.com is a web-powered slideshow viewer. Seen a hundred of those already, right? The key difference is that each slide is represented as a unique tiddler, which opens up plenty of possibilities. For example: hosted on a server (using TiddlyWeb), you get an web service API "for free", where you can mash up the presentation however you want by accessing a unique URL for each tiddler. Another example: you could easily add nested comments - for online discussions around the presentation - just by including the comments plugin, which is itself just a tiddler.

~TiddlySlidy was created by Paul Downey in conjunction with http://www.theteam.co.uk/. It's being used by staff delivering presentations on the road. They can easily customise a presentation by flipping into Author mode.

</html>

You can also see a longer video where Paul combines http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWNpanHwP9I. Another project where Paul has craftily constructed a very unconventional user-interface for ~TiddlyWikis is http://tiddlypocketbook.com (http://www.youtube.com?v=dFzzWp2b_gI).
yay! To get started with this blank TiddlyWiki, you'll need to modify the following tiddlers:
* SiteTitle & SiteSubtitle: The title and subtitle of the site, as shown above (after saving, they will also appear in the browser title bar)
* MainMenu: The menu (usually on the left)
* DefaultTiddlers: Contains the names of the tiddlers that you want to appear when the TiddlyWiki is opened
You'll also need to enter your username for signing your edits: <<option txtUserName>>

|Options|##Configuration|
|Description|Show tiddlers one at a time with automatic permalink, or always open tiddlers at top/bottom of page.|
This plugin allows you to configure TiddlyWiki to navigate more like a traditional multipage web site with only one tiddler displayed at a time.
!!!!!Documentation
>see SinglePageModePluginInfo
!!!!!Configuration
<<<
<<option chkSinglePageMode>> Display one tiddler at a time
><<option chkSinglePagePermalink>> Automatically permalink current tiddler
><<option chkSinglePageKeepFoldedTiddlers>> Don't close tiddlers that are folded
><<option chkSinglePageKeepEditedTiddlers>> Don't close tiddlers that are being edited
<<option chkTopOfPageMode>> Open tiddlers at the top of the page
<<option chkBottomOfPageMode>> Open tiddlers at the bottom of the page
<<option chkSinglePageAutoScroll>> Automatically scroll tiddler into view (if needed)

Notes:
* The "display one tiddler at a time" option can also be //temporarily// set/reset by including a 'paramifier' in the document URL: {} or {}.
* If more than one display mode is selected, 'one at a time' display takes precedence over both 'top' and 'bottom' settings, and if 'one at a time' setting is not used, 'top of page' takes precedence over 'bottom of page'.
* When using Apple's Safari browser, automatically setting the permalink causes an error and is disabled.

Today we look at TiddlyDocs, a product that's being used in production by BT people and external partners. A written signature still has legal significance, so printed documents have their place in this new world of enterprise wikis, hence TiddlyDocs. It's a product that lets co-workers collaborate in wiki-like ways on a linear document that will ultimately be printed out and signed off. Sections can be marked according to completion status and owner, and contributors can leave comments below each section.

TiddlyWiki is a good example of ~TiddlyVerse reuse. The first prototype was built in two weeks, as developer Simon McManus mostly assembled and configured existing component. Assignment of sections to individuals was performed using custom tiddler fields and dropdown controls borrowed from http://GetTeamTasks.com. Comments below each section was powered by the http://tiddlywiki.mahemoff.com/CommentsPlugin.html. The draggable contents tree was incorporated from a http://bassistance.de/jquery-plugins/jquery-plugin-treeview/. TiddlyDocs is running behind BT's firewall, with custom login procedure plugged into ~TiddlyWeb's flexible authentication mechanism, to provide single-sign on for BT users.

You can also see Matt Lucht, the internal BT customer for TiddlyDocs, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_4rDBO9MPk.

Today's showcase is a little different - it's more of an experiment than an outright application you can use out of the box. (That said, I've seen Jeremy use it as the basis of a live presentation, at MiniBar 2009.) Project Cecily is an experimental zooming interface for TiddlyWiki. It's still "a soup of tiddlers", but this time, they're laid out in a 3-D space you can zoom and pan. Project Cecily was created by TiddlyWiki creator, Jeremy Ruston.

A related project, http://www.flickr.com/photos/psd/4364805159/ is in the works from Paul Downey. It would combine features from Cecily with those from TiddlySlidy to provide an app for 3D presentation and exploration.

|Description|selectively disable TiddlyWiki's automatic ~WikiWord linking behavior|
This plugin allows you to disable TiddlyWiki's automatic ~WikiWord linking behavior, so that WikiWords embedded in tiddler content will be rendered as regular text, instead of being automatically converted to tiddler links. To create a tiddler link when automatic linking is disabled, you must enclose the link text within {}.
!!!!!Usage
<<<
You can block automatic WikiWord linking behavior for any specific tiddler by tagging it with<<tag excludeWikiWords>> (see configuration below) or, check a plugin option to disable automatic WikiWord links to non-existing tiddler titles, while still linking WikiWords that correspond to existing tiddlers titles or shadow tiddler titles. You can also block specific selected WikiWords from being automatically linked by listing them in DisableWikiLinksList (see configuration below), separated by whitespace. This tiddler is optional and, when present, causes the listed words to always be excluded, even if automatic linking of other WikiWords is being permitted.

Note: WikiWords contained in default shadow tiddlers will be automatically linked unless you select an additional checkbox option lets you disable these automatic links as well, though this is not recommended, since it can make it more difficult to access some TiddlyWiki standard default content (such as AdvancedOptions or SideBarTabs)
<<<
!!!!!Configuration
<<<
<<option chkDisableWikiLinks>> Disable ALL automatic WikiWord tiddler links
<<option chkAllowLinksFromShadowTiddlers>> ... except for WikiWords //contained in// shadow tiddlers
<<option chkDisableNonExistingWikiLinks>> Disable automatic WikiWord links for non-existing tiddlers
Disable automatic WikiWord links for words listed in: <<option txtDisableWikiLinksList>>
Disable automatic WikiWord links for tiddlers tagged with: <<option txtDisableWikiLinksTag>>
<<<
